Decided to make myself sad imagining Gil singing “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Mis after Uma, Harry, and the crew have all been massacred by Auradonian soldiers. Hypothetically.
STOP
Oh.
Oh I like this.
Better idea: Uma survives, her crew dies, imagine the GUILT. She’s the captain after all…
Crap, no! I realize I started this, but still, NO!
I’m not sorry! 😛
On that note – In addition to survivor’s guilt and plain old grief…Gil’s Uma’s second mate.
It’s the second mate’s job to protect the crew (or at least the captain and first mate).
Maybe one where he thinks it’s real but it’s not and then, later, he hopes against hope it’s not true and slowly realizes they’re not coming back this time.
This is the absolute saddest thing ever (and exactly why angst + teamwork = misery), but I am intrigued to think of what kind of character Gil would become after that. I feel like whatever was left behind by them, he would devote his life to protecting or finishing.
So say Harry and Uma had a kid. Who is now an orphan.
Sad Gil caring for sad kid.
I think Gil would be very protective but also very lost. His brothers can take care of themselves, he thinks Gaston can do anything and he’s not close with his stepmother. Lefou Deux, maybe? I also think he’d be more firmly against Auradon. They killed all his friends after all.
Meanwhile, if Uma’s the survivor, she’s going FULL ON Mockingjay on Auradon’s ass.
The downside for that abominable trout Sessions getting fired (and his resignation makes it clear he was) is that it opened the door to the even worse Kobucher to get in and for Whitaker to be taken over.
Time to start calling reps, but be aware that the GOP won the senate this position is senate confirmable, not house confirmable.

Bad news – Senate didn’t flip. The Senate is slightly more important than the House because the Senate confirms appointments of the President. You also need a trial by Senate to impeach anybody.
Good news – The House DID flip and can still block the nastiest of the administration’s legislation and do a lot of their own investigating. For instance, I’m told they’re asking the IRS for those tax records the President didn’t want to give.
Also, several senate races were as close as they’ve ever been. Change is happening, it’s just slower.
Plus, if we’re honest, the Senate was ALWAYS an uphill battle. The Democrats needed to keep all their seats and flip two. Not impossible, but difficult when they had far more seats up for re-election. Next election, it’s the Republicans who have more up for re-election and that could go very differently.
About 20% of the black population was re infranchised in Florida last night, which is excellent.
More diverse politicians are being elected! That’s almost always a good thing.
Overall – Not a bad result at all. Not a perfect result, but workable. Now don’t stop calling your reps and demanding change. You can do this!
I always get slightly confused during American elections, because you always see hashtags like #voteblue, to signal support for the Democrats.
In Canada, nobody who’s progressive wants to do that, because Blue is the colour of our Conservatives. Our Liberals (Centrists) are Red, and our most left major party (NDP) is Orange.
I wish they’d explain why if it’s random it’s always flipping Democratic votes to Republicans in only one specific tight race? Because that looks no more random than the voting machines flipping Gore to Bush in 2000 or Kerry to Bush in 2004. Check your screens carefully if you are in a machine vote state.
Because its not one specific tight race. These eSlate machines have been a problem in multiple elections and multiple races.
Superheroes that are like “if we kill them we’re just as bad as they are uwu” ? Micro dick energy
The only exception is Aang, whose whole “I’m not gonna kill him if i can find another way” thing is less false moral equivalency and more “I’m twelve and I have been through way too much bullshit this year to add ‘commit my first murder’ to the list.”
I do respect superheroes who don’t kill, and I really think “we’re as bad as they are if we do it” is a terrible oversimplification of why someone would come to that moral conclusion.
Three reasons why a hero might not kill:
1. They are not granted by their society a “licence to kill.” Many (not all) people accept that a soldier or a judge might need to kill a wrongdoer in the course of their duties. Those people (should) act under strict rules and processes to determine when a death is just. A society, to be peaceful, usually functions under a guarantee that people won’t on their own judgement decide to off people. Vigilantes don’t usually have state-sanctioned authority, but they do rely on public goodwill to be counted as heroes and not menaces or even villains. A hero, especially an independent, self-proclaimed one, may lack the authority or judgement to serve as executioner. Most just societies require a trial before delivering a sentence.
2. They don’t need to. Paradoxically, or maybe not so much so, the stronger a hero is, the less they need to kill. One of the most common defenses for a murder is “self defense,” the idea that the person making the plea was in so much danger from the deceased that killing them was justifiable. But once you’re a swordsman swift enough to cut bullets or a muscleman strong enough to lift trucks, who’s that big a threat? As your control over your power and your ability to master an opponent both increase (and barring completely wild or uncontrolled abilities, these two are very linked) the easier it becomes to hold back, to subdue with the minimal amount of damage and to render even the worst villains neutralized without going nuclear.
3. The power to kill is bad for their mental health. Not everyone can perform even a “just” killing with a clean conscience. A hero might fear the trauma of killing, and seek to avoid the damage. Or a hero might introspect, and realize that, should they kill today, tomorrow the choice will be easier. Killing an opponent, rather than subduing them, is often the easy way out, and a hero who comes to rely on that solution might find themselves killing more and more, Even if killing isn’t addictive, a hero might still fear that mindset.
Now, a common version of this problem is Batman, who wouldn’t kill the Joker even if the Joker is at maximum edge, dealing out huge terrorist acts and body counts. The best reason for Batman not to kill him isn’t “I am as bad as the Joker if I kill,” but more, “I am a man who uses superheroism as a trauma coping mechanism, and if I start committing extrajudicial killings my mental state and my loose alliance with the police will both deteriorate.”
THANK. YOU.
That’s an excellent way of describing Batman’s issues with killing.
Also, for note, Superman’s reasoning is a mixture of #1 and #2, with a smidge of #3. He’s had story lines where he killed people before and he was horrified with what he’d done (#3) because he realized after the fact that his sheer power and respect for society meant that not only did he not really need to but that he probably shouldn’t be making that decision on behalf of society (#1 and #2).
