America, history has its eyes on you.

The Midterm Elections will be held on November 6, meaning you must register to vote by the end of September. Some states are more lenient than others, but there is no reason to delay!

If you think you’re already registered, check your registration herehttps://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/

If you need to register, register to vote herehttps://www.vote.org/register-to-vote/

You have a little more than ten weeks left to register. Again, your state may be lenient but the history books will not, do not delay, do it now!

Even my formerly staunch anti-voting husband has registered to vote because he recognizes how fucked everything has become.

In a lot of states, you can register online! You may have to print, sign, and mail in the application, depending on the area. Libraries often let you do those things for free or very, very cheap!

If you are unsure where to start, message me! I will help you figure it out!

Last week my brother was in a car accident. He was hit by a drunk driver. He sadly lost his life after a two and a half day fight in critical condition. He was my best friend. We did everything together; we travelled, listened to @taylorswift and had heart to heart talks. I can’t help but to stress how things could have been different.

Before taking the wheel of a car, ensure you are not intoxicated. If you go out to drink, arrange alternate transportation to get home, like an Uber or taxi. This can not only save your life, but also the lives of other innocent people.

Please do not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Reblog this to save a life today!

😬BOOST THIS!!!!!!😬

Yes please! It’s so easy to say “Nope! I can’t drive I’m drunk!”

I’ve done it many times, even when your intoxicated. I’m a complete light weight two shots in, I’m done. And of course it’s not like when I was/am drunk I don’t think about driving of course I was drunk I had a stupid idea but it’s easy to make the decision not to act on stupid ideas.

No excuses. If you get behind the wheel drunk or intoxicated or under the influence of anything (prescription drugs, illegals drugs, ect) and you accidently take someone’s life, you are a murderer, home wrecker, child taker, widow maker, parent taker, asshole. I could go on but I’d hope by now you get the idea.

Do Not Under Any Circumstances, Get Behind The Wheel Drunk.

Thank you

Thank you 💕

Ontario librarian creates online guide for teachers to find available Indigenous course content

allthecanadianpolitics:

A librarian at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto has compiled a list of Indigenous education content available.

The resource compilation is a response to the recent cancellation of Truth and Reconciliation curriculum writing sessions that were to build upon Ontario’s curriculum by infusing Indigenous knowledge and pedagogy across all subjects and grades.

“I compiled these items so that teachers would have something that they could look to that are largely created by Indigenous educators, artists, and authors to bring those authentic world views into their classrooms,” said Desmond Wong.

Submitted by @caesuria.

Librarians making cool stuff? Always reblog.

Also, check around university and college websites to see if your library makes similar lists. Many make lists of books and other resources for classes or institutes/centres on campus you can peruse.

[ image description is screenshot of post that says, “amazon is extending its prime day because people supporting amazon workers’ strike are hurting its bottom line. keep it up!” ]

The people have more power than they even know.

Again, the strikers main request is do not buy anything on prime day. Even if you slip and end up on the site or use subsidiaries often, not buying for Prime Day is a way to help while fulfilling the worker’s requests.

Also, if you DO have to buy something at Prime Day, you can still spread the word about Amazon’s labour conditions, the strike, and register your displeasure with Amazon’s customer service line.

Black people with vaginas who are pregnant I urge you to find a black doula or a midwife to help with delivery. The medical community is extremely racist and contributes to mortality of black infants and those giving birth.

There is legit a medical bias that black people feel way less pain than other races, so our pain is taken way less seriously. We could be in a life or death situation and the yt doctors and nurses will brush off our pain.

It happened to Serena Williams also (look it up).

Medical bias against black and brown people is very much real.

And I would recommend reading the Medical Apartheid it delves deeper into the racist medical community that is still prevalent to today

“According to the CDC, black mothers in the U.S. die at three to four times the rate of white mothers, one of the widest of all racial disparities in women’s health. Put another way, a black woman is 22 percent more likely to die from heart disease than a white woman, 71 percent more likely to perish from cervical cancer, but 243 percent more likely to die from pregnancy- or childbirth-related causes. ”

From this article: https://www.npr.org/2017/12/07/568948782/black-mothers-keep-dying-after-giving-birth-shalon-irvings-story-explains-why

Here’s a link to the 1a page on this subject. Has a podcast about it as well as a link to Serena Williams discussing this:

https://the1a.org/shows/2018-05-14/why-u-s-maternal-death-rates-are-so-high-and-what-we-can-do-about-it

^^^Bless for the extra info!

The comments about racial bias in the medical system are true, as is the fact many back pregnant people are affected by things like higher poverty rates, but PLEASE do not seek out a midwife. Midwives in the US are, by and large, dangerously under trained and do not have the proper training to diagnose and manage complications in pregnancy. There are so many cases where midwife care goes badly for pregnant patients – either for them or their baby. IF you seek out a midwife, I urge you to get a CNM – a Certified Nurse Midwife. They DO have better training but informally a lot of pseudoscience has spread around the profession. DO NOT seek a Lay midwife or a CPM (Certified Professional Midwives). They DO NOT have appropriate training in the US.

Also, home birth in the US is much more likely to be dangerous in other countries. If your prospective doula or midwife tries to tell you that home birth in the US is just as safe as the hospital, RUN the other way. They are not telling the truth, either through ignorance or because they are lying. Multiple studies have shown this is not true, including one by MANA (Midwives Alliance of North America) itself.

If you choose to seek out a doula or midwife, grill them HARD on pseudoscience. What is their stance on C-sections? What about epidurals? Do they aggressively encourage exclusive breastfeeding or skin to skin even in situations that’s a bad idea like when you or the baby need to rest or seek further care? Do they support ultrasounds and other types of monitoring as necessary? Do they refer for GBS tests or gestational diabetes tests? Honestly, if you want a black health care provider, your best bet is most likely an OB.

Protecting yourself from racism in medical settings is important but so is protecting yourself from pseudoscience.

So I know we’re all over here laughing forever at the “Fuck Batman” moment (as we should be).

But can we also talk about how much Raven looks like an extra from the Thriller video in this shot:

Frankly, this trailer would be improved if she broke into the Thriller dance at this point. That should have happened.

At this point, the trailer’d be improved drastically by her doing either the Thriller dance or the Monster Mash instead of whatever straight out of a bad horror game thing this is. 😛

TITANS – Official Trailer – DC Universe

Who is this show for?

I have no idea.

Edgelords?

People who “Want comics to be taken seriously”?

Idiots?

Yeah, this looks fundamentally flawed, and I hope I’m wrong about it, but trying to be this dark with heroes like this is a mistake.

It’d be a miracle if it’s made to work.

Which is sad, because there are some positives to this.

They’re just hard to see due to the lack of light.

– majingojira

@thefingerfuckingfemalefury

Yeah….

Like

I WANT this to turn out to be good?

And maybe it’s gonna be better than the trailer suggests but wow

Dick Grayson growling out Edgy McEdgelord Lines while he beats people to death and broods over his Violent Violence and the overall feel of this is just

trying too hard to be grim and “Serious”

The original comics and later ones were plenty serious at times too but the characters still actually acted like people not the main character from a straight to video 90′s action movie…

i dunno how i feel about this…

It feels like an odd direction to be taking this idea

Like

While lots of Titans stories have been serious over the years the characters while they took what they do seriously were way more like “Team Flash” over in the Flash…a group of friends who have fun together and enjoy hanging out and fighting evil…while this feels like they’re trying to make the team even more grim and angry than Snyder! Batman or season one of Arrow and just have it be as brutal and dark as can be…

Maybe things will be a bit less “All Darkness All The Time” when the show itself starts?

@luanna801 – I found it! I’m so sorry, friend.

Wow. So. That sure was a thing.

I actually have to say… I am not, per se, against the idea of this show going to some dark places. The classic Titans did have some legitimately dark stuff: Raven’s connection with Trigon is incredibly dark and should be treated as such. Kory’s backstory is that she was enslaved by the Citadel, and strongly implied to have been repeatedly raped. Dick was tortured and brainwashed by Brother Blood (and did, in fact, have a lot of existential identity angst about his relationship with Batman). Even a goofy character like Gar has a whole lot of tragedy, in both his backstory and his eventual doomed relationship with Terra.

(And speaking of Terra, obviously IDK if this show plans to bring her in, but that whole storyline went to some extremely dark places.)

So my issue isn’t actually that this trailer is too dark. My issue is that it’s trying for dark and ending up with cringey instead, and that it’s sacrificing characterization to do it.

You can do dark things with Dick Grayson’s character. Heck, I recently wrote a whole long post about how Dick is an overachieving perfectionist who never knows when to quit and is constantly at the point of cracking under all the burdens he takes on. He also can have a serious temper when he’s pushed too far, and has an incredibly deep guilt complex. But he’s not some hyper-violent “You don’t know what I’ve become” edgelord, and he never has been. There are dark aspects to Dick’s character: This just isn’t how to do it.

Likewise with Raven: Literally struggling with her inner demons is always what her character has been about. She should be scared. She should have a serious dark side that she’s constantly fighting to control. None of those character beats are wrong, it’s just that the execution is terrible and makes her look like the stuff of a C-level horror movie.

My issue with this is honestly less that it’s dark and more that it’s just… bad. The dialogue is bad, and the line delivery makes it worse. The special effects are bad. The whole thing just feels… cheap and cliche and cringe-y. The only characters who have any real characterization so far are Dick and Raven (I don’t want to judge too much by one trailer, but one can’t help noticing none of the actors of color get to say one word here), and he’s been turned into Violent McEdgeLord in a way that feels incredibly false to the character, while she feels like a watered-down Halloween knockoff of herself.

I honestly could be here for a Titans show that went to some dark places, if it was written well and true to the characters. But this doesn’t look like that show.

As per usual, Luanna says everything I think. This was aiming for dark and somehow we got Over the Top Edgelord.

First Home in the U.S. specifically for sex-trafficked boys is set to open in late 2016. Of course neighbors pulled a stink and tried to get the house shut down before it even opened.

The founders are still trying to take donations to help cover maintenance costs. You can find more information about this ministry and donate here

OOOOH THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR MANY REASONS

Excellent

I CANNOT believe how much resistance they’re facing.

People are worried about their property values when these young boys have literally been sold as sex slaves and raped and abused in who knows how many other ways. They just need a safe place to heal and protection while they testify against their abusers so we can put the actual criminals in prison.

And people are worried about them “taking their medicine” like we’re trying to cure them of something. These are trafficking victims. But apparently people are more worried about these boys than they are about making sure the people who abused them go to prison.

Oh man, as soon as I get a little extra money I’ll be donating to this fine cause because this is just fucking great. I hate all the shit they’re getting for it, but shit or no shit I want to support these people.

This is very important

I love that every few months this post gets another surge of notes, and now is good a time as any to give an update.

In late Fall last year, the area of North Carolina where this house is set to be opened experienced a lot of very bad flooding. This has set them back. They wanted to be open by now, but they have finished restoring the house and are now working on furnishing it so they can open soon.

The link above is broken, so here is an updated one. You can see they  now have a registry for Target and Walmart open. If you want to donate by buying items they need to furnish it, you can do so this way.

You can also make a donation or become a monthly partner here.

I am so unbelievably happy that this exists!

REBLOG THIS SO HARD!!!

!!!!!

Please reblog and help these people

theres a new product by verzion called “hum” that allows your parents to track your car and places you go, if your parents are controlling like mine please check under your steering wheel to make sure that they havent installed this

here is what it looks like installed:

you can read more about it here, and here this excerpt sums up what information Hum will send:

“a car’s owner will be able to get notified on their phone when the vehicle leaves a pre-determined area or drives faster than a set speed… [Hum] will enable location tracking and a driving log, which measures travel times, engine idle times, and average speeds.”

People in abusive relationships, please check your cars.

DO NOT TRY TO UNPLUG IT BY YOURSELF!

To add to this nightmare, I’ve just heard of a thing called ForceField where people get to monitor and block internet sites that you’re going on if they don’t approve.

It tells the user what sites/apps you’re going on, for how long you’re on them, and WHERE YOU ARE ON AN UPDATING MAP.

So you know if you’re in an abusive household and use sites like tumblr to escape and talk to friends, you could be cut off from that.

They say “it’s not spyware” but it sure sounds controlling and creepy to me.

signalboost

God. Fuck. That’s scary.

Life 360 is another tracker. My parents have used it on me, not allowing me to delete it from my phone, and sometimes even demanding selfies to prove I was where the map said. (As if I’d go anywhere without my phone)

SpectorPro is another one. Afaik it can’t track location, but it takes screenshots roughly every 20sec to allow the installer to watch a video of your computer activity. It also tracks all keystrokes, so passwords aren’t safe, and records any website you visit + the duration. It’s incredibly creepy and a huge violation of privacy, and was one of the cornerstones of my abuse as a kid.

even if you’re not in an abusive relationship/family, please spread this because you might have just saved someone’s life

SIGNAL!!!! BOOST!!! SPREAD IT!!!!

While I’m full support of the Amazon strike and subsequent boycotting, please  remember that sometimes disabled people rely on Amazon for food delivery, entertainment and necessary supplies. This is especially pertinent to people who, like myself, live outside of the shipping range for most alternative companies and cannot access these products locally.

Support the workers and the strike, boycott Amazon, but please don’t demonise those who can’t.

For those of you in a situation like this, please know the workers request was SPECIFICALLY not to buy anything at Prime Day sales. If you need to use a subsidiary or other services for food, supplies, and other necessities (or even if you use a subsidiary like a Firestick, Twitch or Goodreads a lot) you can still help the strike so long as you didn’t buy anything SPECIFICALLY on sale for Prime Day.

If you had to do that, or again if you forgot, you can also still spread awareness of Amazon working conditions, the strike, and register your displeasure with Amazon’s customer service contact info. The phone number is 1-877-586-3230 and resolver (https://www.resolver.co.uk/freeadvice/services/672/issues) will help you craft an email.

This is a great addition! I really appreciate you pointing out the other ways we can help, especially with such good accessibility features such as the email assistance. Thank you for adding this on!

No problem, helping can be hard and not everyone has the same abilities and circumstances. The last thing that’s helpful for a strike is feeling like you can’t help because you can’t avoid using a service or because you’re human and forgot or something else happened. Even if you can’t do the main things, there’s almost always some other way to help.
