If you’ve been watching the noise and paying attention to California, you’ve heard about the Camp Fire.
In a matter of hours, the fire jumped to 20,000 acres. This morning it reached 70,000. My town of Paradise, where I’ve lived my entire life, was consumed entirely. Very little containment has been reached and the situation is absolute hell.
My house was one of the first to go.
My mom and my sisters and I barely got out, in separate cars, and we got separated for 10 hours. My mom and little sister were stuck in Paradise with all my pets in the flames until my stepdad was able to get gas to them so they could get out. My cat was lost, and I personally was only able to grab an extremely small amount of my own belongings because I was helping my mom to grab important documents and photos and to get the pets situated.
We are now homeless, with no clue where to go from here, and desperately in need of help to get food, clothes, supplies, anything. My mom has been disabled for 3 years and we survive on a single income from my stepdad, who is a firefighter. His friends have been hurt trying to fight this. We have a dog with us, and two guinea pigs, and a bearded dragon.
My mom set up a fundraiser, even though we are not at all the type to ask for so much help.
I honestly didn’t know they made a post about me till now. Honestly I feel like someone just wanted to see some drama go down. But y’know I get it, we all love a little drama. But this is really not going to be as dramatic as you may have hoped.
I’ll start off by saying that all lives are equal. We were all put on this earth by some force of nature, whether you believe it was a god or evolution or anything else. Something took the time to design our intricate and unique features, to give us different personalities and desires. I can’t imagine the amount of work that goes into creating a single life. Yet we take 56 billion of them a year.
We are not special. We don’t get to decide who deserves life and who doesn’t. We don’t get to decide who’s life is worth more. No we are inhabitants of this earth alongside other inhabitants who deserve the same respect and consideration as we do. If we were killing even 10 humans a year to feed people when it wasn’t absolutely necessary, there would be an uproar! You don’t get to play god. It’s not our right to help ourselves to someone else’s body because it tastes good to us.
Now before I get any further, I’ll reiterate what I’ve said a thousand times at this point. I know that not everyone can go vegan. I know some people have health issues that make it very hard for them. If you need animal products to stay alive and healthy, I never have and never will want to make you feel bad about that. Your health comes first. The same way I wouldn’t condemn the circle of life. The lion needs to eat the gazelle to survive, and that is their instinct as well. There is nothing natural however about factory farms and over breeding billions and billions of animals a year to eat them when you don’t need to.
Both the British Dietetics Association and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have said that a properly planned vegan diet is sustainable and healthy for all stages of life, including pregnancy. So if you have a health reason why you can’t go vegan, fair enough. But other than that… theres no other reason. The theory that a vegan diet is more expensive has been disproved a hundred times and proven that it’s actually cheaper in most cases.
Now let’s talk about the comparison between animal and human lives. I think they are equal. They are equal. And no human can sit here and decide otherwise. It’d be about as valid as an animal deciding they are actually above people and deserve to kill billions of us every year cause we so yummy. We bring up the holocaust and slavery all the time to fight in separate, current human rights issues. But it’s wrong to do it to fight for animal rights. That’s speciesism right there. By the way speciesism is discriminating against animals. If it’s ok to do it in one situation, it’s okay to do it in both. And if you feel it’s not right to do it in the fight for animal rights, it’s also not right to do it in the fight for human rights. Equality. Give me a solid reason why it’s different without saying you believe animals are less than humans. Lemme know.
And the guilt thing? You have to be kidding me!! I’ve seen countless people driven off the internet, told to kill them selves or harm themselves, bullied relentlessly, even found and harassed in public because of a microaggression they said online ignorantly. I’ve seen people fear for their lives because of the threats they get for the smallest slip up. Yet you’re concerned about vegans spreading knowledge of how animals are tortured and abused everyday because of your purchases?
Look at what happened to Tana Mongeau, YouTuber, who was taped saying a racial slur at the age of 13 and then that tape was spread around the internet. She was constantly bombarded with hate and threats and all of this shit. Not saying whether that is wrong or right. But if we can do this to people who ignorantly say something homophobic or racist or sexist, and no one even says anything about it, how are you gonna say I’m horrible for making people feel guilty with the motherfuckin truth. Like that’s ridiculous. Social justice people bully people to the extreme all the time. For simple mistakes and microagressions too. At least vegans just try to educate you, usually in the nicest way possible.
You have a conscience for a reason. To prevent you from doing bad things. Like that’s just ridiculous that I’d be responsible for making you feel shitty about your shitty decisions. If someone said something racist and then another person presented them with reasons why that’s hurtful and wrong and they felt guilty about it, who’s fault would that be? The person who did the shitty thing or the person who let them know?
Your guilty conscience is not on me. If you are doing a bad thing and feel bad about it, that’s not my fault. Once I realized I was doing a bad thing by killing innocent beings when it was unnecessary for me to do so, I stopped. I felt bad. I felt guilty. That’s what drove me to change. That’s what gives you growth. If you bully a kid at school and never realize that it’s wrong and never feel that guilt, you’ll never change and stop harming that kid. Guilt is a part of life. Using guilt to abuse someone, like making them feel guilty about something they shouldn’t feel guilty about, is not a part of life and not okay. That’s why I always say that people who have to eat meat for health reasons should not feel guilty.
The way to go about it when you realize you are doing something wrong is to obviously stop doing it. But the way most people go about it is cognitive dissonance. Justifying their actions anyway they possibly can. So when a vegan comes along and exists, that fucks with their cognitive dissonance and it makes them feel guilty. Rather than changing the bad habit, they justify it and then get mad at anyone who jeopardizes the delicate mental shield they had to put together to sleep at night.
And the sociopath thing, yeah it is an actual disorder I think it’s more medically known as anti social personality disorder. But I shouldn’t have used that for my argument, that was wrong.
If feminismandmedia wants to unfollow me because they are triggered by the vegan posts, that’s fine. That’s up to them, no hard feelings. But I thought I’d make my case on the rest. Also I want you all to know that I don’t think you’re a bad person for not going vegan. I think good people do bad things everyday. I think everyone makes mistakes.
So yeah that’s my response. I probably won’t respond to too many messages like I just lack the energy to do so. I’ve said the same things a million times. If you want to understand where I’m coming from I can link some people and you can learn about it. I’d love it if ya did but I just don’t have to energy to keep on arguing this shit. So if I get a lot of people asking about why I think humans are herbivores and whatever else groundbreaking statements I made, I’ll put together a little resource post and reboot this one with that. Thanks for reading if you made it here!
Given that we have tagged you twice, I wonder as to why you’ve not known. Regardless, the goal was not to start drama. The goal of our followers who brought this up in the first place was simply to demonstrate that someone we followed was making them uncomfortable and being problematic. So here we are.
Also, again, it’s wrong to use the Holocaust and slavery as comparisons for human atrocities too. I’ve seen a zillion Jewish and black bloggers saying to keep those things out of your mouth unless it’s something along the lines of “The Holocaust is an example of genocide” or “X, Y, and Z are historical signs of bad things coming, as seen in the Holocaust, as well as A,B, and Z”. It’s not speciesism to be told to keep terrible things out of your mouth when its not relevant, especially if you’re not a member of the group who was affected.
Honestly, content warning: A lot of dogs at a lot of risk in 2019.
I wanted to talk about this in detail – I don’t normally talk about
the politics of greyhounds, nor greyhounds much at all on my blog.
On
election day, Florida approved Amendment 13, a ban on betting on
greyhound racing in the state. As it stands, there are 5 states where
they still race dogs; Florida is the largest of these by far. 11 of the
16 race tracks in all of the US will stop racing by Jan 1, 2020.
Florida, their Constitution, and why they’ve fucked up:
There are around 20,000 greyhounds born every year in the US. Again, probably close to 12,000 of this are from Florida. I don’t have whelp numbers on hand, but this is probably about right. These dogs can race until they turn 5, so there are at least 4 years worth of dogs in Florida right now, at most 48,000 dogs in the system in Florida. Realistically, some (most) dogs retire really, but all the pups and yearlings are still there, so the number must be at least 24,000. Again, NORMALLY, there are 20,000 greyhound born every year and 20,000 greyhounds that get adopted every year. This system is a tight balancing act between volunteer run groups, like Greyhound Pets of America, and the farms and tracks that raise and race these dogs.
Groups like “Protect Dogs – Yes on 13″ ran big campaigns to raise awareness for the amendment and pass it. What “Protect Dogs” didn’t do is help us formulate a plan on how to go from 20,000 adoptions in 2018 to (the normal) 20,000 adoptions, plus another 24,000-48,000 dogs coming just out of Florida. That’s a 125-225% spike in dogs that will need adopting next year.
Floridians voted for something I want. I want to see a reduction of greyhound racing in my lifetime. Florida was probably the biggest culprit out of the group – Florida tracks were responsible for some of the worst conditions in the US. At large, the farmhands and workers that raise these dogs care about them deeply, just like anyone would. I want to see greyhound racing come to an end in Florida. But not like this.
We estimate that about 100 dogs a year die on the track in Florida – that’s <1% of all racing dogs in Florida. Each death is a tragedy, and one that could be avoided, but now Floridians have voted to put the lives of at least 24,000 dogs at risk. That’s the equivalent of 240 year of dog racing accidents, all without the infrastructure of foster homes, training programs, vets, and adoption homes that we need.
“Well, racing is bad! What do you suggest, smarty?”
Easy. Rather than ending in 2020, the amendment should have tapered off towards 2024. That would give 5 years (the maximum normal racing period for a dog) to ramp down the dogs. The farms would stop breeding, the dogs could be retired at a normal pace, and the industry could wind down on its own without leaving tens of thousands of dogs out in the cold. No extra stress on the retirement process.
“Well, just send them to a humane society. Solved.”
Not so fast, buck-a-roo. Not only are many humane societies in the US chronically full and underfunded, but we have a complicating issue. Greyhounds spend the entire first 2-5 years of their life being an athlete, not a pet. A 5 year old greyhound may never have:
climbed stairs
been inside a residential building
seen a dog other than a greyhound
seen a mirror
been in urban environments
literally done anything a normal dog does
With all of this in mind, they don’t just need a place to go, they need a normal life, with a foster family who’s willing to help the dog adjust to human society. We can’t just expect them to normalize while sitting in a humane society or pound – they need the extra touch.
“Oh jeez, wow. Maybe Florida did fuck up a perfectly good cause by pushing it to happen too fast.”
You fucked up a perfectly humane cause is what you did. Look at it. It’s got anxiety.
“Ok, but how do I help? Dogs are hard”
Dogs are hard – take it from someone who has spent the last 4 years fostering. There’s a couple of easy things you can do, and some tougher things.
Spread awareness
This one is simple. Reblog this post, bring this up to people you care about outside tumblr. Make sure everyone knows that.
Donate to a group like Greyhound Pets of America
There’s two ends of this. On the adoption end of this, groups like GPA need resources to help dogs travel to their foster hosts and eventual home. They need money for food. Cash is king. Lookup your local chapter and let them know you care. Donate as you can.
On the other end of this is greyhound rescue. We’ve talked about retirement, but a small number of dogs are stolen/bribed off of a track and taken to the underground racing world. This is where the real abuse happens, and honestly, it’s bad. It’s only going to get worse next year. There’s no way that some dogs won’t slip through the cracks and end up shipped off to a puppy mill or an underground racing group. Amendment 13 will absolutely worsen the lives of some existing Florida racers. Rescue groups work with animal control and local police to break up these illicit rings and make sure the dogs are well taken care of. These rescue groups, especially throughout Appalachia, will need your help this year. Again, cash is king.
Adopt a greyhound
Approximately 1.6 million dogs are adopted annually in the US. With any luck, the dog lovers of the US can take on another 20,000 without incident. Adopt one of these loving dogs and you’ll have a health, faithful companion for many years to come.
Foster greyhounds
Lastly, and most importantly, we need foster homes (perhaps more than adopters). Foster homes are going to make sure that these dogs get the love and care they need before moving on to an adoptive home. I’ve fostered in two different cities in the US. Many cities, especially though the south and Appalachia, have a branch of Greyhound Pets of America, or something like it. Even this year, we were always looking for as many foster homes as possible. A single track in WV closed this year, and it swamped the local groups in dogs. Eleven tracks are closing this year in Florida. We’re already at capacity. Please, consider fostering greyhounds. In many cities, if you foster, you can have a great temporary pet, and they pay for the food and vet bills. They mostly just need homes. If you foster, you’ll be helping as many dogs as you take in over the course of the year.
I know this is a lot of info. If you have questions, reach out to me, @thelovelyscientist; another greyhound blog on here, I’m sure @noodlehorsecomics could answer questions; or talk to your local greyhound adoption group.
Iqaluit’s second and largest grocery store caught on fire overnight. the fire was confined to the warehouse and the main store area was unaffected other than smoke damage. Iqaluit officials say there is no concern of food shortage, but we aren’t convinced. are Iqalummiut
supposed to eat smoke damaged food, or..? about 60% of Iqaluit’s food is bought at this Northmart.
Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special
counsel’s Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect
the investigation. By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting
Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller’s boss
on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the
investigation.
Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the
investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it. The
Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit
not to assume supervision of the investigation.
Donald Trump just crossed a red line, violating
the independence of the investigation pursuing criminal charges in the
Trump-Russia scandal and cover-up. Trump putting himself above the law
is a threat to our democracy, and we’ve got to get Congress to stop him.
We’re mobilizing immediately to demand accountability, because Trump is
not above the law. Please make note of the date, time, and description
below to confirm that the host is able to organize the event on such
short notice!
Note: If you choose to attend an event, you agree to
engage in nonviolent, peaceful action, to act lawfully, and to strive to
de-escalate any potential confrontations with those who may disagree
with our values.
The Not Above The Law
protest is ON for Thursday, Nov. 8, 5:00pm, at Boston Common
(across from the State House)! Trump crossed the line today when he
forced Sessions out and put a crony in charge of the Mueller
investigation. This is a peaceful though spirited rapid response rally,
with more details to follow later tonight and into tomorrow. Get your
posters and chants ready, and prepare to raise your voices and stand up
for democracy! Also, sign up at our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/284755215335127/
When:
Thursday, November 8 at 5 p.m. (local time)
Where:
Boston Common, near the 54th Regiment Memorial
First, a reminder that we are committed to this being a peaceful and
safe yet spirited protest. We expect all attendees to abide by the law
and to participate in a constructive way.
Second, we would
appreciate you bringing any sources of light: flashlights,
battery-powered candles and the like. We want to SHINE A LIGHT on the
corruption, cruelty, and ruthless attacks this president continue to
pursue. (And besides, it’s getting dark pretty early these days.)
Finally, we encourage you to bring posters, chants, and to please spread the word. We are focusing on several items:
We demand that Matthew Whitaker recuse himself from any involvement
with the Mueller investigation into Russia’s interference with the 2016
election.
We affirm that the special counsel’s investigation
must proceed unimpeded and without interference from the president and
his toadies.
We call on our elected representatives to take
concrete actions to protect the Mueller investigation, and to fight
against the corruption, self-dealing, and cruelty of this
administration.
Finally, thank you for helping to spread the word
about this rapid response rally. Let’s stand together to protect and
preserve our democracy.
The big story tonight, honestly I think, are the ballot initiatives. Here’s a partial list (note, I’m ignoring some really shitty ones, and the ones I know nothing about whatsoever, but…)
Colorado ended slavery in prisons
Florida added a constitutional amendment enfranchising felons
Maryland got same-day voter registration
Massachussetts got gender identity protection
Michigan got straight-ticket voting, automatic voter registration, same-day voter registration, and no-excuse absentee ballots as well as independent redistricting!
Missouri is getting $12 minimum wage by 2023 (currently it’s $7.85)
Nebraska expanded Medicaid
Oregon refused to ban public money for abortion
Then there’s taking the House, coming to a near miss in Texas Senate (get Beto more funding and have him take another shot in 2020, he’d do more good challenging for Senate again than running for President and losing the primary early), some state houses and senates, some governorships (even if not as many as we’d like)…
Over all, though it doesn’t FEEL like it because the big name races didn’t go great and the Senate got worse, this WAS a good night.
Caveat: these are all preliminary, but that’s what the numbers seem to show right now
I want to add one in my state: Washington votes to require all Law Enforcement to be trained in first aid, mental illnesses, and de-escalation techniques. They will also be required to administer first aid when needed and prove they attempted to de-escalate a situation. This absolutely will save lives.
That’s great! It didn’t have any results when I posted, but I am also here in Washington and was watching it.
They…didn’t ALREADY get de-escalation technique training?
I find it hilarious how you grasp at straws to throw me under the bus because you don’t have a legit argument against me lol
Here is the bit where I talked about animal rights and “compared” them to slavery and the holocaust
“Now let’s talk about the comparison between animal and human lives. Equality. Give me a solid reason why it’s different without saying you believe animals are less than humans.”
As you can see, I brought up the fact that we use those events in arguments about human rights but it’s wrong to use it for animal rights because people feel animals are below them. I never said whether using those events as arguments is right or wrong, I left that up to the reader. I simply pointed out that if you use it in one situation, but think it’s racist to use it in the other, you’re a hypocrite
It’s not speciesism for black people to not want to be compared to animals lmao. It’s not like racists do that on the regular to dehumanize poc lmao. /s
You don’t get to speak for Jewish and black people on what should and shouldn’t offend them. It’s straight up racist and anti semitic to judge us for not wanting vegans to make the comparisons you’re talking about. If you continue to think this way, you are the one that’s a hypocrite. You make a ton of posts advocating for poc and Jewish people but the minute we have an issue with vegans using horrible things that happened to us as comparisons for their propaganda, we are being “specieist” lmao. That’s the definition of hypocrisy. In defending these comparisons you are trivializing the things that cause us to have intergenerational trauma. You care about animals more than you care about us, like a true white person lmao.
@feminismandmedia I’m tagging y’all so you can see this poor excuse of an explanation for their racism and anti semitism.
Also, a lot of black people and Jewish people have asked for slavery and the Holocaust not to be used as comparisons for human tragedies either. Generally, it seems to be preferred to recognize different things as their own distinct tragedies unless what you’re saying is relevant (ex. “Y has led to all sorts of problems historically, such as in A, B, and Z”).
