The House is Voting on a Federal Abortion Ban after 20 Weeks on 10/3

lauralot89:

Call your representative now.  Here’s where you find their information: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has scheduled an October 3rd floor vote on H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The bill would impose a federal ban on abortion procedures after 20 weeks of gestation. The law is based on the false argument that fetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks; scientists have concluded fetal pain only occurs in the third trimester (28 weeks), at which point abortions are generally prohibited.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that only 1.3% of all abortions take place after 20 weeks and usually occur because of severe fetal anomalies or maternal health risks. Twenty-week abortion restrictions not only endanger women’s health but also criminalize doctors who are trying to make the best and safest medical decisions for their patients. (Information taken from 5calls.org)

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE.

Here’s what to say (script from 5calls.org):

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [Town].

I’m calling to express my serious opposition to H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This federal 20-week abortion ban is not only unconstitutional but also jeopardizes women’s health and physicians’ ability to care for their patients. I demand Rep. [Name] vote against this disgraceful bill.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Call your senators today to tell them

– To extend CHIP funding to help children get and keep health insurance. It expires on September 30th if not extended.

– Demand they vote no on the confirmation of Chairman Pai of the FCC. This will help the fight for Net Neutrality, because he’s leading the push to get rid of it.

– To ask for aid for the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Scripts are here: http://itstimetofight.weebly.com/call-list-for-friday-sept-29th.html

And there’s a post there with links to find your senators.

https://5calls.org also offers scripts for CHIP and Puerto Rico/Virgin Islands.

ALSO – applications to extend DACA must be received by October 5th so spread the word on that!

No no no no no.

I cannot stress this enough – do not call senators who do not represent you.

Best case scenario, they don’t listen and point you towards your senators. They don’t care if you like what they do or if you donate to their opponents or whatever, they care if you vote for them. If you don’t, they don’t listen.

Worst case scenario, they stop answering claiming ‘harassment’ or decide anybody anti-Graham-Cassidy is from out of their jurisdiction.

If you want to help, the best thing you can do is call YOUR senators and tell your friends, family, and followers to call theirs – or, if you’re not American, post and boost information saying call their senators.

You can find your senators here: https://www.senate.gov/reference/reference_index_subjects/Directories_vrd.htm

Also – a lot of senators are asking governors for input here. Call your governor as well! https://www.usa.gov/state-governor

Vote 👏🏼 in 👏🏼 the 👏🏼 2018 👏🏼 Midterm 👏🏼 Elections 👏🏼

SERIOUSLY

If you vote in Democrats, they’ll be able to block Trump’s policies

It’s not just that they’ll be able to block Drumpf’s policies for the (hopefully only) remaining two years: the
entire House of Representatives is up for re-election in 2018
. Whoever
wins the House in 2018 will still control it in 2020, when we have our
next census. This means we voting districts will get to be redrawn and if Republicans retain control of the House in
2020, they will make gerrymandering even worse than it is now, which
already favors them.

But the odds are severely in favor of Republicans for 2018. The election is ridiculously lopsided:
23 Democrat seats and both (there are only 2) Independent seats (who
Caucus with Dems) will be up for the taking compared to only 8
Republican seats.

Not to mention midterm election turnout is always far less than POTUS elections and Republicans consistently turn out for midterms while non-Republicans fail to show up worse than they normally do.

It gets worse. This is the Senate race in 2018:

  1. Arizona – Currently Republican
  2. California – Currently Democrat
  3. Connecticut
    – Currently Democrat

  4. Delaware
    – Currently Democrat

  5. Florida
    – Currently Democrat

  6. Hawaii
    – Currently Democrat

  7. Indiana
    – Currently Democrat

  8. Maine
    – Currently Independent
  9. Maryland
    – Currently Democrat

  10. Massachusetts
    – Currently Democrat

  11. Michigan
    – Currently Democrat

  12. Minnesota
    – Currently Democrat

  13. Mississippi
    – Currently Republican

  14. Missouri
    – Currently Democrat

  15. Montana
    – Currently Democrat

  16. Nebraska
    – Currently Republican

  17. Nevada
    – Currently Republican

  18. New Jersey
    – Currently Democrat

  19. New Mexico
    – Currently Democrat

  20. New York
    – Currently Democrat

  21. North Dakota
    – Currently Democrat

  22. Ohio
    – Currently Democrat

  23. Pennsylvania
    – Currently Democrat

  24. Rhode Island
    – Currently Democrat

  25. Tennessee
    – Currently Republican

  26. Texas
    – Currently Republican

  27. Utah
    – Currently Republican

  28. Vermont

    – Currently Independent

  29. Virginia
    – Currently Democrat

  30. Washington
    – Currently Democrat

  31. West Virginia
    – Currently Democrat

  32. Wisconsin
    – Currently Democrat

  33. Wyoming
    – Currently Republican

All of the states in bold were awarded to Drumpf, 11 of which are currently held by Democrats. Republicans hold a 52 seat majority right now. If they can maintain the 8 seats they have to defend, they only need 8 Democrat and/or Independent seats to have a 60 seat supermajority and the power to pass basically anything they want under Trump for two years.

If you think it’s catastrophic now (and it is), imagine Drumpf and the Republicans with a 60 seat supermajority for two years plus a Republican House with the power to redistrict in 2020.

And that is why organizing now is critical. Getting people to run against every GOP House Member and tying every action by Trump to them. Make the 2018 elections ALL ABOUT TRUMP. This is also about taking back Governor’s Mansions.

It is NOT impossible, but it requires effort. 2018 elections efforts SHOULD ALREADY BE UNDERWAY!

@ all my american followers

Important note: States redistrict. Not Congress. So, while it’s important to keep Trump from making gains it’s also crazy important to work on state legislature races.

ALL OF THIS

Check out who’s running locally, county wise, state wise, and federally. Maybe the local person wants more street lamps. Maybe the county won’t work with ICE. Maybe the state will do something to help block harmful immigration bans. Feds can block awful policies.

So, yes, check out fundraisers nearby. Volunteer, phone bank, canvas, talk to people. If you talk to one person and they share to ten people, and those people share, a lot gets done.

Town Halls are Out

blenderbender1811:

If you want to set up a meeting with your representatives during this month’s recess or go to the their town hall meetings, now is the time. Definitely google your rep’s district office contact info and projectownhall will let you know if they’re holding a meeting.

These are good places to press on healthcare, net neutrality, and diplomatic (Non-military) solutions with North Korea.

doctordisaster:

If you live in the US, you should not be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea in a “we’re all going to die” way. DPRK has one rocket that can reach the continental US, it’s barely gotten functional, and they have no warheads small enough to be carried by that rocket. They can theoretically hit Hawaii and Alaska, but Hawaii is a small, long-range target and Alaska has very low population density, so attacks there would likely be ineffective.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t be freaking out about nuclear war with North Korea. It’s to say that you should stop being so fucking self-centered about it.

We’re not going to die. If we nuke North Korea, we’ll wipe out thousands of noncombatants, just like we did in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even in an “ideal” outcome for that first strike, where Kim goes down immediately, his military apparatus will retaliate — against South Korea and probably Japan. This hypothetical nuclear exchange will kill millions of civilians who, surprise surprise, live far away and look sort of not-European. Then we’ll spend the rest of our long, non-incinerated lives bickering with each other over whether it was cool of us to start that fight.

If you want to speak out against Trump’s nuclear bullshittery, don’t bleat “we’re all going to die.” Yell “no atrocities in our name.”

Call your reps, call district offices, makes appointments, check out Project Town Hall to see if any are near you.

Contact them and press for non-military solutions and make it clear these threats are not just bad for the US.
