Hey Tumblr! Are you gonna talk about this?!

I’m seeing a lot of confusion about people who thought this fight was over. The SENATE voted for net neutrality. The House still needs to vote. You need to contact and pressure your member of congress.

You can find your member of congress here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative

If you don’t know your ZIP code, google your address. It will likely tell you.

I Called My Reps has a script here: http://icalledmyreps.weebly.com/net-neutrality—part-deux.html

5calls also has a script here: https://5calls.org/issue/fcc-net-neutrality-cra

You can also call your state representatives to enact net neutrality laws: https://5calls.org/issue/state-net-neutrality-protections

Call your reps and tell them you are opposed to John Bolton’s appointment if his previous stances concern you (Hint: They should. Both Democrats and GOP congresspeople have opposed him previously for a reason).

It’s also a good time to tell your reps you want the president’s first strike power restricted.

This could be your last chance to stop ISPs from messing up your Internet!

https://www.battleforthenet.com

WE HAVE ONE WEEK LEFT TO FIGHT THIS PLEASE HURRY! This is the URL to enter your phone number to call Congress and ask them to repeal. We NEED to fight this people!

https://www.battleforthenet.com/

I can’t tell if this is real or just a very surreal meme.

Unfortunately this is real.

You guys can’t just call congress. The FCC is doing this. You need to file a comment on their site telling them you are against the repeal, especially since they’ve proven they’re not willing to ignore spam and anti-net neutrality bots.

Also, PLEASE, do not waste your time tweeting or commenting on your congressman’s social media. It’s a waste of time at the federal level. They can’t go through it all. You need to CALL them or WRITE to them, preferably call. Visiting works too but PLEASE call.

The House is Voting on a Federal Abortion Ban after 20 Weeks on 10/3

lauralot89:

Call your representative now.  Here’s where you find their information: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find/

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has scheduled an October 3rd floor vote on H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The bill would impose a federal ban on abortion procedures after 20 weeks of gestation. The law is based on the false argument that fetuses can feel pain at 20 weeks; scientists have concluded fetal pain only occurs in the third trimester (28 weeks), at which point abortions are generally prohibited.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that only 1.3% of all abortions take place after 20 weeks and usually occur because of severe fetal anomalies or maternal health risks. Twenty-week abortion restrictions not only endanger women’s health but also criminalize doctors who are trying to make the best and safest medical decisions for their patients. (Information taken from 5calls.org)

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE.

Here’s what to say (script from 5calls.org):

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [Town].

I’m calling to express my serious opposition to H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This federal 20-week abortion ban is not only unconstitutional but also jeopardizes women’s health and physicians’ ability to care for their patients. I demand Rep. [Name] vote against this disgraceful bill.

Thank you for your time and attention.

[IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied]

Town Halls are Out

blenderbender1811:

If you want to set up a meeting with your representatives during this month’s recess or go to the their town hall meetings, now is the time. Definitely google your rep’s district office contact info and projectownhall will let you know if they’re holding a meeting.

These are good places to press on healthcare, net neutrality, and diplomatic (Non-military) solutions with North Korea.

Have some links

It’s time to fight: http://itstimetofight.weebly.com/call-list-for-thursday-august-10th.html
5calls: https://5calls.org/issue/recP3XRP4IFDvaCgF

The first one will help you find out if any town halls are near you, and the latter will help you find your reps and their district office call info or address, as well as scripts for those of you with phone anxiety.

For those of you who like to fax, this site will help you for free: https://faxzero.com

Call

blenderbender1811:

blenderbender1811:

Call your senators about the health care bill and tell them you do not want the ACA repealed. Today was a vote to proceed on the vote for this. Tell them you do not want this bill.

Call if you have a Dem senator and tell them you appreciate fighting the bill. Call  if you have a GOP senator and tell them you don’t want it. Call YOUR senators. Other people’s senators will not tally your call and may use it to ‘prove’ their constituents support it because the opposition is from outside.

Can’t get through in DC office? Call district offices.

They turned off the phones or you have phone anxiety? Send emails.

Emails aren’t getting through? FaxZero is being very helpful with faxes.

No access to faxes? Snail mail.

5calls and it’s-time-to-fight.weebly.com both offer scripts.

Now light up those lines.

Guys, keep calling. The vote could be today or tomorrow. This is important. A million jobs are on the line and, more importantly, so is healthcare for millions.

Social media is not the same as calling, emails, faxing, or letters. Social media does nothing federally. There’s too much of it.

Call.

You guys have seven hours of debate left. We still haven’t even SEEN the dang bill, so definitely light up those phone lines.

Also – if you see anything about Dems voting against a single payer amendment, it’s because the amendment is only there to troll – it was never going to be taken seriously and the vote does not necessarily reflect their feelings about single payer.

House bill 2796

princeofmorley:

euryale-dreams:

ayellowbirds:

lethargiclesbian:

I just heard about house bill 2796 a bill that has recently been proposed and I’m pretty fucking scared by it.
The gist of the bill is this:

“This bill prohibits the word “sex” or “gender” from being interpreted to mean “gender identity,” and requires “man” or “woman” to be interpreted to refer exclusively to a person’s genetic sex, for purposes determining the meaning of federal civil rights laws or related federal administrative agency regulations or guidance.“

This is some scary ass shit and we need to fight it with whatever we can, every step of the way.

that “genetic sex” bit really makes it obvious the people responsible have no idea what they’re doing and are all the more dangerous because of it.

The bill is before the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. Of the eight representatives on the committee two are sponsors of the bill. The members of the committee are:

Steve King (Iowa 4) (Sponsor)
Ron Desantis (Florida 6)
Trent Franks (Arizona 8) (Sponsor)
Louie Gohmert (Texas 1)
Karen Handel (Georgia 6)

Steve Cohen (Tennessee 9)
Jamie Raskin (Maryland 8)
Jerry Nadler (New York 10)

Information current as of July 16th.

TO BE CLEAR: H.R. 2796 – called the “Civil Rights Uniformity Act of 2017″ – is a direct attempt to repeal the Obama administration’s protections for people who identify as LGBTQ, and specifically, people who identify as transgender, intersex, or gender-nonconforming.

Under President Obama, the U.S. Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services all issued rulings that redefined “sex discrimination” and “gender discrimination” to include discrimination against a person’s gender identity and/or expression.

This is about Equal Employment protections. This is about access to bathrooms. This is about transgender people having health insurance to cover “gender transition treatments or sex change operations” under the Affordable Care Act.

In addition to reversing the Obama administration’s protections against gender identity discrimination, the bill would also prohibit the executive branch (i.e. the President) from ever reinterpreting the definitions of “sex” and “gender” to include gender identity, and would instead require an act of Congress to add protections against gender identity discrimination in any matter governed by federal law.

H.R. 2796 was introduced on June 7 and referred to the House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice (a subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee) on July 12. As the last post stated, two of the committee members are co-sponsors of the bill – including the committee chairman, Rep. Steve King of Iowa.

Now, the same bill was introduced last year and was also referred to the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. No hearing was ever held on the bill, nor any action taken – but last year, none of the committee members were co-sponsors of the bill and we had a president who would have vetoed it even if it had gotten through.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

If you’re a constituent of one of the above-listed subcommittee members – call them. Call them today, tomorrow, the day after. Call them as much as you can. Ask your friends and relatives to call them. Tell them this bill is an unambiguous attack on civil rights in the United States.

If you’re not a constituent, you can still call them. Call up the subcommittee members or the Judiciary Committee’s general phone line and tell them how fucking pissed you are.

Here’s a link to the House of Representatives phone directory.

And here’s the general contact info for the Judiciary Committee:

House Committee on the Judiciary
2138 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515
(202) 225-3951

You can message them on Facebook and Tweet at them, too. Phone calls are far more effective, however.

Keep an eye on the Judiciary Commitee’s calendar in case they decide to hold a hearing on H.R. 2796. (As of July 16, there are no hearings scheduled yet.)

Call or write to The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, CNN, the Huffington Post, or whatever national or local media source you get your news from to tell them that they need to be covering this bill so it doesn’t get swept under the rug.

Call or write to GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, and the ACLU to make these organizations aware of this bill and tell them you’re counting on their resistance.

Stop HB2796

postcardsfromspace:

HB2796 is an absolutely blatant attempt to strip away the civil rights of transgender people; and it’s absolutely fucking terrifying.

Quoting the official summary of HB2796:

This bill prohibits the word “sex” or “gender” from being interpreted to mean “gender identity,” and requires “man” or “woman” to be interpreted to refer exclusively to a person’s genetic sex, for purposes determining the meaning of federal civil rights laws or related federal administrative agency regulations or guidance. No federal civil rights law shall be interpreted to treat gender identity or transgender status as a protected class, unless it expressly designates “gender identity” or “transgender status” as a protected class.

HB2796 is currently with the Republican-majority House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. Please, PLEASE–especially if you’re cisgender, and doubly if you’re one of their constituents–call the Representatives on the committee and explain just how much damage this will do, how many lives it will destroy, and how many legislative careers (hopefully) hinge on its passage or failure.

Committee members are:

(Note – Listed phone numbers are for DC offices only, but links go to pages with both district and federal office information, as well as additional avenues of contact.)

Another day, another reason to light up those phone lines.
