Performative allyship

cishetsrgross:

I see more posts by white people asking if it’s “okay” for them to see Black Panther than I do see them asking for links to charity campaigns trying to help young Black kids see the movie.

which is to say the BP tags have like three of the former posts every day, but I have yet to see a SINGLE post by a white person asking people to send them links for campaigns they can support.

I need someone to realize that this is the pinacle of performative allyship.

they’re out here trying to get their hoodpass into wakanda but aren’t ready to let Jerome hold a dollar. They want to be invited to the cookout, but won’t even bring a bag of ice. They want to think themselves the ‘special white people’ but don’t actually want to do the work of the special white people.

and before you, white person clearly missing the point of this posts asks, yes, you CAN reblog this if it’s to show support of the message.

Here’s some links, btw, to gofundmes that still need funding for helping black kids see Black Panther:

Canada: Has had only 3 mass shootings in the last 10 years thanks to gun control.

The UK: Has had 1 mass shooting since gun control was introduced in 1997.

Japan: Has never had a mass shooting, thanks to gun control.

Australia: Zero mass shootings since the port arthur massacre in 1996.

The US: Had 383 mass shootings in 2016 and 273 so far in 2017.

So take your “gun control doesn’t work!” bullshit and stick it up your ass.

Mass shooting” in this context is defined, using the FBI’s definition, as a shooting where 4 or more people are killed, not including the gunman.

You think at this point the US would at least be willing to TRY. If they were actually as pro-life as they claimed… it would stand to reason this would be considered unacceptable.

The majority of Americans want gun control. The National Rifle Association and the politicians it has bought do not, as they do not see it as profitable. In fact, the NRA benefits from school shootings, as immediately following each one, gun sales go up.

If you have some method for breaking a gun owners’ organization that is also a rich and powerful lobby with the ability to get gun control advocates voted out of office (or prevented from entering office) by said organization’s more fanatic supporters—an organization roughly as strong as Disney or Time-Warner—please tell Tumblr what it is. Otherwise, please knock it off. Americans know about gun control. Most of us want gun control. We just don’t know how to overcome the criminal greed of those blocking it.

The NRA is very powerful, but not unstoppable. It has 5 million members – nowhere close to a majority of the number of gun owners, never mind the majority of Americans. Many of the NRA’s members are single issue voters, but many others have indicated they would favour reasonable gun control laws.

It’s also nowhere near the largest donor and donations don’t guarantee policy. The Chamber of Commerce donates more and half the policies they support fail to pass.

The best way to combat the NRA is to organize and vote for people who are pro-gun control. Vote for presidents who will appoint pro-gun control justices. Call your electeds – local, state, and federal – and demand they support gun control regulations.

The NRA aren’t the only voices. There’s is just loudest because they’re more organized.

You guys have got this. I believe in you.

Please be cautious when you go to the movie theater.

Make mental notes of the exits both front and back of the complex.

Keep your kids close at all times.

Please be safe.

Big factssssss.

I was just thinking about this. All y’all please be safe. These white nationalists be bold asf nowadays

I used to work for AMC theaters, I’m not sure if this applies for every company but this is the layout for AMC.

– There’s an emergency exist in EVERY AUDITORIUM right next to the screen. There will be an exit sign right above it, you can’t miss it.

– At the bottom of EVERY screen in the theater, if you lift the curtain there is space to hide.

– IF YOU SEE AN EMPLOYEE OPENING UP A DOOR THAT REQUIRES A CODE, FOLLOW THEM. THEY LEAD TO SAFETY.

Republicans Are So Afraid Of Fair Elections, They Want To Take Away Your Right To Vote For Senator

karadin:

quakerjoe:

This one is pretty fucking serious. It’s not about voter fraud, it’s about shitcanning everyone’s ability and right to vote.

Instead of being elected by the people, Senators would be chosen by the State legislatures, guaranteeing that the majority party would pick Senators of their own party.

If there is a vacancy the Governor would appoint a Senator for the remainder of the term. The pick could not be changed by the legislature or the public.

State legislators can recall a Senator at any time.

.If successful, they will reverse one of the great strides toward democracy in American history: the 1913 decision to end the corrupt practice of letting state legislators barter off Senate seats in backroom deals with campaign donors and lobbyists.

It seems gerrymandering the House is not enough for Republicans who want to completely shut out opposing voices. Yet, gerrymandering does fit with a long-term plan to turn America into a permanent single-party-rule nation.

With control of 32 state legislatures, the GOP would have an easy time hand-picking fascist-conservatives to fill up the senate.

With CN’s schedule quality having reached all-time lows last year, such as the infamous Week of TTG, it’s time for the voice of the fans to be heard!

Starting tomorrow (2/15) (Noon EST and 6PM EST), hit up twitter with the hashtag #ABetterCNSchedule with your thoughts on how you would improve the channel’s daily programming and typical lineup of shows, as well as any complaints you may have about the current one.

(For those who don’t have a twitter, check out my feedback post here.)

If you want Steven Universe and any other favorite CN shows to be given the love and attention that they deserve, here’s something you can do!

A better way to handle this would be to contact Cartoon Network’s customer service and complain about their scheduling.

The entirely unnecessary demise of Barnes & Noble

Posts like this aren’t my usual fare, but there’s a lot of
readers on Tumblr. So y’all might be interested – or, if not, you really should
be.

On Monday, this went down:

That’s the bloodless, matter-of-fact, ho-hum business event
way of describing it. Let me paint you a different picture.

On Monday morning, every single Barnes & Noble location –
that’s 781 stores – told their full-time employees to pack up and leave. The
eliminated positions were as follows: the head cashiers (those are the people
responsible for handling the money), the receiving managers (the people
responsible for bringing in product and making sure it goes where it should),
the digital leads (the people responsible for solving Nook problems), the newsstand
leads (the people responsible for distributing the magazines), and the bargain
leads (the people responsible for keeping up the massive discount sections). A
few of the larger stores were able to spare their head cashiers and their
receiving managers, but not many.

Just about everyone lost between 3 and 7 employees. The
unofficial numbers put the total around 1,800 people.

People.

We’re not talking post-holiday culling of seasonal workers.
This was the Red Wedding. Every person laid off was a full-time
employee
. These were people for whom Barnes & Noble was a career.
Most of them had given 5, 10, 20 years to the company. In most cases it was
their sole source of income.

There was no warning.

But it gets worse.

Guess what the UK did after the Dunblane Massacre in 1996? Passed 2 more gun control laws, making it even harder for people to privately own firearms. What was the last school shooting in the UK? The Dunblane Massacre of 1996.

Gun control is the most effective solution to school shootings. Wake up, America.

Gun control is the most effective solution to school shootings. Wake up, America.

We Americans know that, Europe.  Hell, a majority of Americans are in favor of gun control.

The main obstacles are the Second Amendment to the Constitution (which every gun nut in the U.S.

–which is not the same as “every gun owner”–regards as enshrining gun ownership as a right, and which would be practically impossible to remove); the National Rifle Association (a huge and insanely powerful gun owners’ group dedicated to loosening all laws and regulations that restrict gun ownership, lobbying Congress to pass laws that favor the NRA/more guns, AND to ensuring that every politician favoring gun regulation and control gets voted out of office); and a large percentage of Congress, most of which is in the NRA’s pocket and which is much more interested in NRA bribes donations than it is in saving human lives.

So you tell me, Europe, because this comes up every time there’s a shooting in the US.

WHAT DO YOU WANT ORDINARY PEOPLE TO DO?  Because we do not have the power to change things. We can protest, we can complain, we can lobby…but the ones who could pass gun control laws don’t give a fuck about preventing shootings. All they care about are their guns and/or their profits.

The NRA is a powerful voting bloc, but it’s not unstoppable. The reason they’re successful is only partially because of the donations (which, proportionately, aren’t really that much of these people’s donors. The Chamber of Commerce spends more and half their policies fail).

The rest of it is because their members are relentless and many of them are single issue voters (though, I would note, many of their members have indicated they would favour reasonable gun laws), and yes, they know how to lobby and contact their reps demanding the things they want.

So, people in favour of gun control need to do the same. Go out and vote for gun control candidates, call off the hook demanding gun control, demand your electeds sign on for gun control bills (I can think of three off the top of my head circulating right now (S. 1916 – Automatic Gunfire Prevention Act which would ban bump stocks, which are what was used in Vegas which has 40 cosponsors and no GOP, S. 2095 – Assault Weapons Ban of 2017, and S. 2009 the Background Check Bill – this one isn’t perfect, but it was meant to open negotiations and hopefully meet somewhere in the middle on gun control). The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act is going around too – call your Senators and tell them to vote no on it. It’s a terrible idea – 19 states don’t require training or live-fire experience (so don’t you tell me about ‘responsible gun owners’) and 12 don’t require a permit or background check at all, so yes, crossing state lines and having concealed carry cross over is a good way to threaten public safety. Ask your state or local legislators for bans on AR-15s. Long term, elect presidents who will appoint justices favourable to gun control and interpret the Second Amendment differently.

It’s going to be long and require lots of public pressure, but if you believe gun control is worth doing, then please call about it. The NRA has 5 million members, not even a majority of gun owners and certainly nowhere near a majority of US citizens. You guys can do this.

(Also – not gun control, but H.R. 620 is a bullshit attack on the ADA, so calling asking for that not to pass would be great too. And the deadline for legislation about DACA is coming up, so ask your electeds to protect DREAMers too).

If the War of the Five Kings had never happened. What kind of Marriage options would Shireen have had given her grey-scale affliction and as the Heir of Dragonstone?

goodqueenaly:

Let’s be clear: some version of the War of the Five Kings was always going to happen on the death of Robert. Both Stannis and Renly are definitely aware of the “Baratheon” children’s true parentage, and both of them were making plans to deal with the huge dynastic bombshell that fact represented (either before Robert’s death or after it). A scenario in which war doesn’t break out over the crown following Robert’s death/murder would have to change fundamental facts about ASOIAF, and then, well, it just isn’t ASOIAF anymore.

In that respect, Shireen’s marital prospects would be inherently tied to her worth as Stannis’ only child. She might be a young girl scarred by greyscale, but as the cognizable legal heir of a man with the best claim to the throne after Robert, she would nevertheless be an attractive prize. To quote Hyke Hunt’s rather blunt view on the matter of marriage, “I’ve known men to wed lackwits and suckling babes for prizes a tenth the size of Tarth” (considering even poor Charles II of Spain was twice wed); for a prize as large as the whole of Westeros, Shireen’s physical appearance is going to matter a lot less than her dynastic one. Any man who marries her would become king (or prince) consort, and with the lack of precedent for ruling queens in either the Baratheon or Targaryen dynasties (that is, those of the united Westerosi kingdoms), that individual, and his family, could effectively write his own powers, and make him virtually (or actually) co-monarch with Queen Shireen. There would be a gamble, of course, since Stannis could someday have a son by Selyse (or another queen), and that same lack of precedent could be used by Stannis’ political rivals to assert that Shireen would have no claim to rule in her own right – but the potential prize would be far too great for at least some ambitious Houses not to try to take it.

However, any specific candidates would depend on how a war between the Baratheon brothers looked, and which Houses aligned with which candidate (or a completely different one altogether). Given the political reasoning behind his own marriage, Stannis would understand the potential necessity of wedding his daughter to a former opponent in order to seal a peace, but that would not be Shireen’s only option. Whether she was wed to a wartime ally to provide troops necessary for Stannis’ war effort (a la that proposed but unfulfilled Pact of Ice and Fire), or were wed after the war to heal divisions, or were even betrothed to Uncle Renly in order to bind up their claims (if Stannis made the same suggestion he did outside Storm’s End), would all depend on what happened, which unfortunately would be impossible to guess without knowing where the major pieces would fall.

Of course, Shireen would still be a little young for marriage; she’s only 11 in ADWD, on the young side of betrothals for noble girls in Westeros. And, of course, Stannis would never have himself forced into agreeing to a betrothal for his only child – one of the very few people in life he seems to genuinely love – especially when he was adamant about not betrothing her to the “weak and sickly” Robert Arryn.

Just a note: She probably wouldn’t be married to Renly. IIRC, parents, siblings, and uncle/niece or aunt/nephew marriages were all considered examples of incest in Targaryen marriages (and one of the things that set people off about them initially). If Renly had a son though (and if he’s claiming the Crown, he’d probably do the same thing he does in canon – marry Margaery), that would work. She’d be a good few years older than him but that’s not unheard of in Westeros – I believe that was the situation with one of the Frey women.

And, while being a king is a big step up even from being the king’s brother, it might still be a bit more difficult to find a marriage for her. Stannis was struggling to find someone willing to overlook the greyscale. That’s also why, even if Alester succeeded in tendering his surrender proposal, Cersei almost never would have accepted the bit where Shireen weds Tommen. Greyscale is definitely a big factor on the marriage market. There are dynastic considerations to be sure, but greyscale complicates it.

EDIT: I was mistaken here. I thought that wedding nieces to uncles and aunts to nephews was one of the things that squicked out the rest of Westeros, but it was actually considered acceptable by them.
