Things You Can Do

I know this past week of meetings in the Senate has been discouraging guys. I do. This is impossible to breathe. So here are some things you can do to help:

– Call your senators about Mnuich (Mee-Noo-Chin) and tell them to vote no. The Senate does not vote on this until 7 EST on Monday. That’s 72 hours to make our voices heard. He’s the nominee for Treasury – he’s unqualified by any measure, failed to disclose 100 mil in assets, exploited homeowners in the 2008 crisis, and is a general bad choice. Learn more here: http://itstimetofight.weebly.com/steve-mnuchin-treasury.html

– Call about Priutt, who has no business running the EPA considering his history of anti-environmentalism and lawsuits against them.

http://itstimetofight.weebly.com/scott-pruitt-environmental-protection-agency.html

– Call about other things – Bannon on the NSC, how you expect your senators and reps to oppose Trump’s odious cabinet, about protecting the ACA and Medicare, about Russia, about the EPA, about Kellyanne Conway’s disgusting ethics violation, about supporting H.R. 804, stopping HR 637, keeping the Election Assistance Committee, about Flynn, protecting the separation of church and state, opposing H.R. 622, object to unravelling Dodd-Frank, oppose Neil Gorsuch, reject the Muslim ban, oppose the wall. All of this is important.

– Who should you call? https://5calls.org/ has a wonderful call list for many of the issues outlined above. All it needs is your ZIP code, which you can get by writing your full address in google maps. Be sure to tell them your ZIP (or full address if your district is cut weird and you don’t live in their ZIP) to ensure your call is logged. http://itstimetofight.weebly.com also offers call lists. Both sites offer scripts.

– Reblog posts encouraging people to call. Again, likes are very nice and much appreciated, but they don’t spread the word. Reblogging does.

– Keep up with your local, state, and national elections. And find out what your elected are doing. A good way to keep up nationally is here, and I would hope your states or localities have similar ways to keep up.: https://www.congress.gov/ If you oppose what they’re doing? CALL. If you agree? Call and encourage them.

– Not good at calling? Email them. Full mailbox? https://faxzero.com will let you fax them, and it will give you a number of free pages per day. Write letters. Go to events. ANYTHING. 5calls will also give you a list of local offices you can try.

– Check your voter registration – is it up to date? If not, update it. If it is, keep it that way as long as you can. 2018 is not far away.

http://www.roadto2018.com/indiana.html and https://swingleft.org offer good information on this.

– Donate and support whatever Democrat you get. A red state Democrat with a few values missing or compromised on to keep in office and whom you can contact to demand improvement from is better than a Trumpian Republican with no Democrat values whatsoever you’ll need to pull teeth with to get to do the right thing. You can influence your representative choices, sure, but work with the candidate you get. This is not optional. 2018 needs to flip to the Democrats and that’ll only happen if you support the candidates who have a chance – not third party or other candidates you think are further left. Work with who you have.

– If you are outside the US, keep up with your own governments too. The rise of authoritarian, neo-fascist, far right, and autocratic governments is real and you need to get ready to vote against it at home.

– Let me know what I can do to convince you to contact your reps. You want fanfic? Meta? Cute animal gif posts? I will do whatever I can to get you to contact your reps (within reason).

– Take care of yourselves. This is exhausting work. After you’ve reblogged call posts and (ideally) called your reps and done research, definitely treat yourself to an ice cream or find a friend to cry with or do something fun for you.

Reblogging this every day until Monday. I think its important

And again for you nighthawks.

If you want to add impeachment or relations with North Korea or any other country, feel free. Especially in light of recent events.

Friendly reminders.

president obama’s on tv giving biden a medal, and meanwhile chelsea manning is still in prison being held in conditions of literal torture. obama has less than a week to commute her sentence and allow her to live.

there are no more political consequences preventing the president from releasing her. he’s not even particularly busy right now, he’s staged medal ceremony for biden that’s being broadcast live right now; they’re both laughing and smiling. and there’s even significant pressure from groups demanding that he get her out of prison. who does that? what kind of person prolongs the suffering of another when they have the power to change things? if they continue torturing her for years, or if chelsea manning dies in prison, how many of you will still love obama and all the people around him who allowed him to do nothing?

She’s on a shortlist to get her sentence commuted.

You can call the DOJ at 202-353-1555 and say “Hi I’m [your name] from [your state and town/zipcode] and I would like ask that Chelsea Manning’s sentence be commuted to time served. Thank you for your time.”

With going through the voicemail process, this takes under a minute. I did it while waiting for pasta to heat up in the microwave. I didn’t even have to talk to someone: I just talked into the voicemail, which they have to check and which counts. If you do have to talk to someone, just say “hi” and then the whole sentence above.

CALL THEM. If this is your first time calling on behalf of something, great! Welcome to exercising your civic liberties upon your elected officials. They are there for you. You are NOT inconveniencing them; this is their JOB.

Important.

With No Warning, House Republicans Vote to Gut Independent Ethics Office

Want a hint as to how a GOP-controlled Congress – with Donald Trump in the White House – plans to govern over the next few years?

Here the fuck it is.

The Senate hasn’t voted yet.

Contact your Senators immediately – phone calls, letters, and emails work the best. Urge them to vote this down. Do this even if they’re pro-Trump. They’re still your Senators. Remind them of that and that they’ll answer for their votes come next election cycle.

This cannot stand. Even if you voted for Trump, this should be a hint to contact your Senators. Congressional ethics is not a partisan issue. It’s an issue of regulating the people responsible for legislating your country. Keep them in check. Hell, isn’t that what Republicans say they want? Fewer abuses of Congressional power? “Drain the swamp” and all that?

So put your money where your mouth is. Call your Senator ASAP.

Reblogging this for you normal waking hours folks.

With No Warning, House Republicans Vote to Gut Independent Ethics Office

If 2016 was really a “change” election, you would have seen incumbents at all levels defeated as voters opted for something new. Or if it were a “change” election specifically aimed at ousting Democrats and bringing about a new era of Republican rule, you would have seen many Democrats defeated. But neither of those things happened. In the House, only one incumbent Democrat was beaten by a Republican, while six incumbent Republicans lost to Democrats. Ninety-six percent of the seats stayed with the same party that held them before the election. In the Senate, all of the incumbent Democrats won, while two incumbent Republicans lost. Only one incumbent governor was defeated, Republican Pat McCrory of North Carolina. There wasn’t much change in state legislatures around the country either: Republicans took control of three chambers, while Democrats also took control of three chambers.

An unpopular president. An unpopular program. Republicans call it a ‘mandate.

It won’t matter, of course, because Republicans play by a different set of rules than anyone else. But there’s an important lesson here for Democrats: stop acting like the other party acts in good faith, because it doesn’t. Stop trying to find bi-partisan consensus, because Republicans aren’t going to ever compromise or cooperate, and why should they? They never face any consequences for that behavior from voters or the press, or – especially – from elected Democrats.

Trump is the most unpopular president-elect in history, and the only reason Republicans have a majority in the house is because of gerrymandering. They have no mandate, they have no popular majority. Democrats are the opposition party now, and they need to act like it. Republicans are going to bully and complain and act like petulant children, so treat them like the petulant children they are.

(via tpfnews)

Democrats need to act like we won majority of the vote and policies that won in the ballot box were aligned with progressive issues, coz we did. We represent the majority, not minority.

(via sandalwoodandsunlight)

Once again, I strongly STRONGLY urge you all to get in contact with your representatives and senators, especially if they’ve expressed disgust or opposition to the shit going on right now. Encourage them to stand up against bullshit like this, and tell them they did something to help you if they do. Hell, even if they aren’t from the party you support, they’re still your reps. Make sure they know that kowtowing to this will result in consequences in future elections.

Personal meetings and going to events to speak to them are the best way. Phone calls are also wonderful though and emails are okay. Social media doesn’t generally get their (or their staff’s) attention.

Quite a few representatives and senators promised to stand up for you and check the abuses of power going on or those attempted. Remind them of that and challenge them to put their money where their mouth is.

Contact information for all representatives and senators can be found on google.

Your quarterly reminder to donate money to the food bank instead of food!

think about the things you like to eat, that you would want to feed your kids:

fresh fruit, veg, meat, milk, bread, cheese, maybe some of those fun dannon yogurts with the sprinkles, ice cream treat?????

none of these things are canned corn. we can get them these things: it’s a common misconception that all food banks distribute is shelf stable stuff. We can even do it so much more cheaply than you can! But we need money to do it. 5 bucks can give a family of four dinner. I know it “feels better” to give stuff, but please, money

This goes for pretty much all charities – stuff is okay if you don’t have money, but really, money.

Ruby Bridges was the first black child to desegregate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in Louisiana during the New Orleans school desegregation crisis in 1960.

This movie made me cry, I was so heart broken by how Ruby Bridges was treated! She was only 6, but was so strong. She is a very brave girl and she did not care what the white folks called her.

People are simply disgusting to minimize people by skin color!

Ruby you might not think you’re a hero… But to other people you are! You are A HERO and you are A PERSON WHO MADE AMERICA CHANGE!

this is white culture, this is their history, this is their legacy…being enraged at a damn baby just because she’s black.

she’s still alive by the way

Ruby Bridges in 2010

“As Bridges describes it, “Driving up I could see the crowd, but living in New Orleans, I actually thought it was Mardi Gras. There was a large crowd of people outside of the school. They were throwing things and shouting, and that sort of goes on in New Orleans at Mardi Gras.“ Former United States Deputy Marshal Charles Burks later recalled, “She showed a lot of courage. She never cried. She didn’t whimper. She just marched along like a little soldier, and we’re all very very proud of her.“

U.S. Marshals escorted Bridges to and from school

As soon as Bridges entered the school, white parents pulled their own children out; all the teachers refused to teach while a black child was enrolled. Only one person agreed to teach Ruby and that was Barbara Henry, from Boston, Massachusetts, and for over a year Henry taught her alone, “as if she were teaching a whole class.”

Every morning, as Bridges walked to school, one woman would threaten to poison her; because of this, the U.S. Marshals dispatched by President Eisenhower, who were overseeing her safety, allowed Ruby to eat only the food that she brought from home.

Another woman at the school put a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it outside the school, a sight that Bridges Hall has said “scared me more than the nasty things people screamed at us.” At her mother’s suggestion, Bridges began to pray on the way to school, which she found provided protection from the comments yelled at her on the daily walks.”

THIS SHIT WAS ONLY 58 YEARS AGO. PEOPLE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS RACIST TERRORISM AND ACTS LIKE IT ARE STILL ALIVE, AND THEIR KIDS ARE IN THEIR 40′S AND 50′S.

DON’T LET RACISM APOLOGISTS GET AWAY WITH “WHY ARE YOU LIVING IN THE PAST,” BULLSHIT ARGUMENTS. WE ARE LITERALLY STILL DEALING WITH THE FAMILIES THAT FORMED HATE MOBS OVER BLACK CHILDREN ATTENDING SCHOOL WITH WHITE KIDS.

I think I’ve reblogged this before, but who cares, this is important and Ruby Bridges is cool.

Hi everyone, I’m Anemone, a 26 year old trans woman struggling with lifelong mental illness (suicidal depression and PTSD), chronic disease, pain and fatigue. I’m currently unemployed due to an undiagnosed pain condition that leaves me unable to stand for more than a few minutes without being in excruciating pain. After leaving my abusive ex over the summer, I’m living on my own and am responsible for all my own bills and expenses – which has made things very challenging without an income. I hope to begin the process of applying for disability soon, but in the meantime I could use all the help I can get for basic needs and, hopefully, transition related expenses like clothes and laser hair removal.

Always remember you are better than they are, and they are nothing, just parasites begging for attention. Do not give it to them! They do not deserve it.

Stay strong, sweetie. You can get through this.

everyone jewish, please turn off submissions. i woke up to that this morning & threw up because it was so horrible & ended up having a break down that involved crying & my mom coming in to see what was wrong.

Democrats have one final shot to flip a Senate seat

blenderbender1811:

blenderbender1811:

sitta-pusilla:

sitta-pusilla:

If you listen to nothing else, please listen to this. There will be a run-off Senate election on Dec 10th in Louisiana, and the Democrats have a shot at winning. If they could get that one seat, it would flip the Senate 51-49 in their favor, and keep the GOP from having complete control of Congress. This is HUGE. This is whether or not SCOTUS Judges get approved, whether or not Bills get passed.

That thing going around about pressuring electors to name Clinton President over Trump is never going to happen. Ever. But this is a thing that actually could. If you know anybody who knows anybody who lives in Louisiana, pressure them to vote for Foster Campbell. Pay for their cab to the polls! Hell, donate to their campaign! This is not fear mongering or hyperbole when I say this last race is life or death for millions of people.

Democrats have one final shot to flip a Senate seat – but in order to pull off an upset, they need to quickly rally around the Louisiana candidate whose victory could be a bright spot in an otherwise dismal year. Public Service Commissioner – and jovial cattle farmer – Foster Campbell will face off against Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy, a twice-failed Senate candidate, in a Dec. 10 runoff.

On the surface, it might seem like a lost cause: A Democrat running a statewide campaign in Louisiana in the Year of Trump. On the contrary, though, Campbell has a legitimate shot to upset his opponent the same way Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards did in 2015. Yes, Louisiana has a Democratic governor. He’s busy at the moment cleaning up the fiscal mess left by his predecessor, failed presidential candidate and Kenneth-the-Page avatar Bobby Jindal.

Edwards pulled off an upset in part because of Jindal’s failures, and in part because he ran against, a less-than-charismatic politician tainted by a bygone prostitution scandal. But Edwards prevailed not only as an anti-Jindal and anti-Vitter. As an Army veteran with family law enforcement ties and a calm demeanor, he was a strong candidate in his own right.

Campbell, too, is a good bet; he has a wicked sense of humor and speaks plainly. During a recent debate, he rebutted false allegations of ties to ex-KKK leader David Duke, saying, “I have nothing in common with David Duke other than we’re probably breathing.”

Democrats who feel frustrated, fearful, and angry following Donald J. Trump’s upset win, listen up: Go donate $5 to Campbell’s campaign. If you’re in Louisiana, vote for him on Dec. 10. If you know someone in Louisiana, spread the word. Help raise money and awareness for Campbell.

Electing Foster Campbell is the most immediate way to rebuke President-elect Trump. A Campbell victory would mean a 51-49 split in the Senate. This is the last best way to make a difference in 2016.

Campbell is a fighter. During his career, he’s fought for ethics reform, lower energy rates for rural consumers, and for victims of domestic violence. Guided by a love of family and a deep-seated faith, he fights for the little man – and woman.

He can win. Repeat that over and over until you take action. The national Republican apparatus is gearing up to defeat him, and you can make a difference.

Campbell is a man of the people; Kennedy is counting on the elite. This year alone, he was the beneficiary of $400,000 from a political action committee funded by one Chicago family.

Campbell doesn’t have a Chicago sugar daddy; he has gumption. Fight for Foster.

Reblogging from myself cuz it’s important

Important.

Okay, guys, this is in a few days and it is important. It won’t actually flip the entire Senate (Repubs lead 51 seats to Democrat 46 and 2 Independents) but any more politicians who disagree with Trump going to Washington can only be a good thing. If you are in Louisiana, I implore you to vote for Foster Campbell.

This is in two days, people, spread this like wildfire.

Democrats have one final shot to flip a Senate seat
